The long sustained phrases of this song require the singer to take a capacity breath at breathing marks, but the breath must be allowed to flow slowly and quietly as in a long sustained sigh, in no sense to be held back. There must be a certain intensity of feeling present in the tone quality, which must not be forced or exaggerated. This is truly a great love song, and should be sung in that spirit. As in the words of Floridia, "The perfect outline of the melody is unquestionable. Its beauty, its virginal purity and intimate tenderness, while recalling to the mind visions of the Greek sculptural art, having a living emotional fascination denied to the marble."
Note: The melody of this song is an excellent medium for developing breathing and resonance. The melody should be practiced on single vowels, such as eh and oh, also 00, aye, and ah.
